Now that she is nearly 3 weeks in (oh my gosh)! I might tell a wee story about Day 1.
From Cape Reinga to Hukatere was the plan. Just a casual 70km, mostly on sand, to kick off this jog. Easy.
So the first funny thing I heard was that Day 1 coincided with a blow karting event. I’m not sure if this was actually reality, but in my mind this conjured up hilarious images of Brooke running her way down 90 Mile Beach, while nearly 100 blow karts were zooming up it. And probably wondering what on earth that Wally was doing in their way.
Whether or not there was a blow kart v runner near miss incident, it seems Day 1 went pretty well.
Until…
Runner and crew are happily reunited, probably settling into a well deserved late dinner, when a clever supporter watching via the Where’s Wally tool (Thanks Kev!) kindly queried the choice of starting point.
What, this one you mean? With this oh so glamorous and official looking race start guide…
Ah yes, as stylish as that is… someone should maybe have double checked the map
Turns out somehow that a short chunk of the official track was missed.
Text from Brooke: “Funny not so funny story about that...testing mum and dads patience and resilience right to the very edge right now...have to go back and do 800m further at the start that this idiot didn't record. As if 70kms wasn't enough... “
So up they all get, drive back to the top of the country, in the dark. Find ACTUAL start point. Brooke meets with a furry friend and checks off the missing 800m. Everyone drives back to where they will be ready to commence Day 2.
Luckily despite this mishap I’m told everyone on board had the right attitude.
And the family chat is ultra supportive…
Day 1 and the fun had just begun
